Expedited Removal

What is Expedited Removal? 

Expedited removal is the process by which a non-U.S. citizen can be denied entry and physically removed from a U.S. Port of Entry (“POE”) upon seeking admission to the United States.  Orders of expedited removal are issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) officials at a POE.  The expedited removal process can only be used in certain situations when CBP officers have determined that an individual is inadmissible for one, or a combination of, the following reasons:

DHS Press Release: New Rules Regarding Search of Electronic Devices at the Border

In a recent press release, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced the issuance of new directives regarding the search and seizure of electronic media (computers, disks, drives, tapes, mobile phones, cameras, music players, and other communication devices) at the border.  These new directives, according to Napolitano, strike a balance between respecting the civil liberties and privacy of travelers while ensuring that the Department of Homeland Security can take the lawful actions necessary to secure our borders.  Secretary Napolitano's press release is available online at: http://www.dhs.gov/ynews/releases/pr_1251393255852.shtm
